Working Together
2017
Moving Image
A 41 second animation of the metrics of a Donald Trump tweet designed to be shown as a loop on a Raspberry Pi screen. By stripping out context, comment and focusing purely on the metrics, the work draws attention to the way that any opposition within a social media context is quickly subsumed within numbers. These metrics were collated when the tweet was 15 minutes old over a mere 15 minute period.
This underscores Kazys Varnelis’ point that within network culture power is focused on a concentration of connections. In a real sense, an interaction in opposition to a tweet (i.e. even saying ‘I hope you are impeached’) has the opposite effect – magnifying the power of the sender through this concentration of connections. The original text of this tweet Trump referenced the different arms of government ‘working together’ to respond to the destruction left by hurricanes on the south coast of America in 2017. The font was designed by Katriona Beales, and each metric was individually animated to form the resulting moving image work.
‘Working Together’ was shown on a Raspberry Pi LCD screen as part of ‘Are We All Addicts Now?’ at Furtherfield in 2017.
